It is the 21st century, the age of digital devices. We rely on our cell phones for more than just text messaging and phone calls, they are our alarm clocks, our camera, our game console and even our wallet. So being without your phone is incredible stressful. You feel like the world is happening around you and you’re not involved in it. In many cases this is causing irrational fears and significant anxieties related to being without your mobile phone. That my friends, is called Nomophobia. A very real and recognized condition, affecting millions of people around the globe, which causes a feeling of anxiety to wash over a person suffering from nomophobia when they lose contact with their phone.
Nomophobia: The fear of being without your smartphone, is said to cause the same level of stress as wedding day jitters or going to the dentist.
Signs of nomophobia are easy to detect. Never turning off the phone, obsessively checking missed texts and calls, and bringing the phone everywhere are clear signs. Using phones at inappropriate times and missing opportunities for face-to-face interaction and preferring over the phone contact are indicators as well. Sound familiar? Physical effects also often occur for nomophobes when their phone dies, breaks or is otherwise unusable. These symptoms include panic attacks, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, sweating, accelerated heart rate, chest pain, or nausea.
If you experience these symptoms don’t worry – you are not alone! A whopping 66% of the population suffer from Nomophobia – and we have to admit that we are included in that statistic. We, as humans, are social creatures. We need constant companionship, we are wired to have the desire to talk and interact with other people. Which makes Nomophobia not all that hard to believe considering cell phones are so easily accessible by everyone. Think about this, roughly 4 billion people around the world use cell phones everyday, but only 3.5 billion use a toothbrush. True story. Yuck.
So when you lose your cell phone or forget it at home do your palms get sweaty? Do you feel your heart rate raising, just a little? If the answer is yes, then you may in fact be Nomophobic.
